Albert Peter “Pete” Stein, the son of Carl Peter and Helen Mary (Leinen) Stein, was born on May 24, 1949, in rural Portsmouth, Iowa. He began school at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School, Portsmouth, and graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic High School, Panama, Iowa, in 1967. Pete was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he served his country from February 3, 1969, to January 25, 1971. After his discharge, he began farming grain, cattle and hogs.
On December 1, 1973, Pete married Patricia Susan James at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He enjoyed the livestock shows at the Shelby County and Iowa State Fairs, and loved helping kids and others show livestock while serving as a 4-H leader. As a longtime sports fan, Pete coached baseball when his children were young, and continued to coach and umpire games as needed.
Pete was helpful in tending the garden and canning the fresh produce. He enjoyed making wine with his good friend. Born into a large family, Pete looked forward to the Stein family gatherings, especially the annual Stein family bowling tournaments and hosting the Iowa/Nebraska football games.
A 17-year cancer survivor, Pete retired in 2018 to allow his sons to take on the day-to-day farm duties.
Albert “Pete” Stein died on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at CHI Health Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He had reached the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 22 days.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Teresa Stein and Dorothy Gross; and three brothers, Robert Stein, James Stein, and Donald Stein. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patty Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; four children, Jorge (Karen) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa, Carly (Shawn) Prouse of Omaha, Nebraska, Peter (Amanda) Stein of Waukon, Iowa, and Sam Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; eight siblings, Alfred (Jeanne) Stein of Lansing, Iowa, Patricia (Randy) Pash of Harlan, Iowa, Carl (Sandy) Stein of Odessa, Missouri, William Stein of Shelby, Iowa, Kenneth (Julie) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa, Lawrence (Carol) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa, Paul (Denise) Stein of Amana, Iowa, and Mary (John) Murtaugh of Harlan, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
