Bernal Gene Gregersen, son of Martin Leonard and Thyra Marie (Jorgensen) Gregersen, was born on April 9, 1931, in rural Elk Horn, Iowa. He played basketball in high school, and graduated from Elk Horn High School in 1948. Bernal then attended one year of college at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He served two years in the United States Army, stationed stateside during the Korean War.

On May 4, 1973, Bernal married Helga Therasia Beck on the family farm near Walnut, Iowa. The couple lived in Atlantic, Iowa, for several years before moving to the family farm when Bernal’s father died in 1976. They continued farming until their retirement in 1995. Bernal and Helga also cared for Bernal’s mother for 18 years following her stroke.

Bernal was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa. He befriended area youth, often giving them a good meal and guidance. Bernal enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching draft horses. He dearly loved his wife, Helga, and greatly missed her following her death.

Bernal G. Gregersen died on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at the Griswold Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Griswold, Iowa. He had reached the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 29 days.

Bernal was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Helga (on December 15, 2003). He is survived by one son, Richard (Cheryl) Gregersen of Walnut, Iowa; one brother, Dalton (Norma) Gregersen of Ames, Iowa; two sisters, Shirley (John) Beier of Omaha, Nebraska, and Carolee Hopkins of Milwaukie, Oregon; three grandchildren, Greg Gregersen, Josh Gregersen, and Seth Gregersen; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on Monday, April 13, 2015, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa, with Pastor Keith Menter officiating. Nancy Watson served as the organist, and Pastor Menter was the soloist. Casket bearers were Greg Gregersen, Josh Gregersen, Seth Gregersen, Terry Gregersen, Cory Gregersen, Scott Beier, Michael Beier, and Jeffrey Beier. Burial was in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery, Elk Horn, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
