Cleo Arnold Anderson, the son of Conrad and Fern (Henry) Anderson, was born on February 6, 1925, in rural Defiance, Iowa. He attended Douglas Country School #9 and Harlan High School (Harlan, Iowa) through the tenth grade. Cleo worked as a hired farmhand before serving in the United States Army for one year. After returning from the military, Cleo farmed with his father near Westphalia, Iowa. During that same time, he also worked for FMCTC in Harlan.

On May 12, 1953, Cleo married Elizabeth Wilhelmena Schleimer at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan.

Cleo was then employed for 18 years as a janitor for the Harlan Community Schools in the Laurel, Middle School, and Westridge buildings. After his years as a janitor, he worked at Wilson Seed in Harlan. He also ran his own sharpening business, “Cleo’s Sharpen-All”.

Cleo was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. He was also a member of the Helmer-Reyelt American Legion Post #150 in Harlan. Cleo raised and trained horses, and loved working with them. He enjoyed going to coffee and going fishing.

Cleo A. Anderson died on Monday, November 28, 2016, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa. He had reached the age of 91 years, 9 months, and 22 days.

Cleo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth, on February 7, 2011; one son, David C. Anderson; and one brother, Keith Anderson. He is survived by one daughter, Julie Bennett of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Penny Anderson of Harlan, Iowa; six grandchildren, Wendy Allmon, Gary Bennett, Lisa Bennett, Dustin Anderson, Mardy Anderson, and Anthony Bennett; 12 great-grandchildren, Lyric Allmon, Jorden Bennett, Caleb Hemphill, Kaia Hill, Mikah Bennett, Logan Heller, Paige Heller, Kelsie Russell, Lucas Russell, Levi Anderson, Brooke Anderson, and Jordan Villarreal; and other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Father John Frost celebrating. Kathleen Kohorst and Maryalyce Dotzler were the musicians. Casket bearers were Ron Miller, Dustin Anderson, Mardy Anderson, Rick (Stick) Anderson, Dennis (Bucket) Anderson, and Jason Fitzgerald. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
