Darell Don Muller, the son of Walter Earl and Catherine Josephine (Miller) Muller, was born on November 8, 1925, on a farm southwest of Harlan, Iowa. He attended Fairview #3 country school through the sixth grade. Darell went to Fairview #2 school in Corley, Iowa, for his seventh and eighth grade years, and finished his education at the Harlan High School, graduating with the class of 1943. While he was in high school, his father bought a 1928 Model A Ford for him to use as transportation to and from school. Darell’s passengers, Robert Havick and Gerald Albertus, helped with the gas money. Later on, he gained another passenger – his future wife, Hazel Bauer!
As he grew older, Darell loved hunting and trapping, and spent a lot of time walking the fields; he also spent a good deal of time with his friend, Ed Sorensen, Jr.
Darell enlisted in the Navy Air Corps and was sent to many bases, including Jacksonville, Florida; Norman, Oklahoma; Purcell, Oklahoma; Lake City, Florida; Beaufort, South Carolina; Cecil Field, Florida; and Great Lakes, Illinois. He served as a top turret gunner on a PV-1.
After the service, Darell returned to the Harlan area where he worked for awhile as a carpenter and later as a mechanic. In 1948, he began renting his father’s farm. On February 18, 1948, Darell married Hazel Emma Bauer at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. They moved to the farm where he was raised, and lived there all of their farming years. In 1985, Darell rented the land to Dallas Klindt, and Darell and Hazel moved into Harlan. In his later years, Darell lived at the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa.
Darell was a member of the Helmer Reyelt American Legion Post #150. He loved visiting with people and during his later years, he spent much time going to Mickel’s Restaurant in Harlan. Darell and Hazel did a bit of traveling to visit their daughters, as well as going to Hawaii, Germany, and Scotland.
Darell D. Muller died on Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 90 years and 20 days.
Darell was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Aldine Nordgren-Baxter. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hazel Muller of Harlan, Iowa; three daughters, Mary Jo (Rick Eggleston) Muller and Linda (Bruce) Mayer, both of Texas, and Judy (Bryan) Patrick of Arizona; two grandsons, Christopher Mayer and Jonathan Mayer, both of Texas; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Ewert of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Casket bearers were Tim Barrett, Jon Mayer, Chris Mayer, Dallas Klindt, Bruce Mayer, and Dave Larson. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
