Donald Dean Poole, the son of Robert Harvey and Mabel Margaret (Hansen) Poole, was born on February 20, 1929, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended Harlan schools and graduated from Harlan High School in 1947. He entered the United States Air Force after high school, serving stateside during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he returned to the Harlan area and began farming southeast of Harlan with his father.

On November 5, 1955, Donald married Mary Margaret Schiltz in Manilla, Iowa. The couple farmed until 1985. In 1979, Donald started a trucking business, and both of his sons drove for the company. The couple retired in 1996 and moved to Harlan.

Donald was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, where he was active in the life of the Church. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus. Donald enjoyed working and liked to stay busy, and he had worked part-time for Hopp Construction. He later enjoyed coffee time with friends.

Donald D. Poole died on Monday, May 4, 2015, at Holmes Lake Rehabilitation and Care Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. He had reached the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 14 days.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, on February 28, 2006; one sister, Betty Kern; and one brother, Robert Poole. He is survived by two sons, Douglas Poole (fiancée, Vicky Woods) of Treynor, Iowa, and Mark Poole of Harlan, Iowa; two daughters, Jean (Mike) Valenta of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Kathryn (Robert) Sopher of Le Mars, Iowa; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

A Wake Service was held on Thursday, May 7, 2015, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, May 8, 2015, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Father John Frost celebrating. Kate Kohorst and Maryalyce Dotzler served as musicians. Casket bearers were Gary Hopp, Neil Hansen, Ben Sopher, Bert Conway, Dennis Poole, and Robby Sopher. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
