Doris Ann Rasmussen, the daughter of Paul and Evelyn (Acton) Darlemple, was born on October 7, 1935, in Lyons, Nebraska. After graduating from Lyons High School, she attended nurse’s training at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Doris married Franklin “Fraz” Rasmussen and the couple moved to Harlan, Iowa. She began working at Myrtue Medical Center and later helped establish the Public Health program there. Doris moved to Omaha in 1977, where she received her PhD in Critical Care Nursing. In 1985, she became a staff member at Bryan Memorial Hospital and also taught Critical Care Nursing. Doris retired in 2008, and had recently returned to Harlan to be near her sons.
Doris was a member of a Lutheran congregation in Lincoln, Nebraska, and was also a member of a number of professional nursing organizations. An avid Huskers fan, Doris had a wonderful sense of humor and a strong will. She enjoyed staying fit, flower gardening, and reading. Doris was also an excellent cook.
Doris A. Rasmussen died on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at the home of her son, Mark, in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 26 days.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister. She is survived by two sons, Mark Rasmussen and his special friend, Brenda, of Harlan, Iowa, and Erik Rasmussen of Glenwood, Iowa; two grandchildren, Katie Ann Rasmussen of Ames, Iowa, and Matthew Rasmussen of Maryville, Missouri; and other relatives and friends.
A private family memorial service will be held with Pastor Steve Chellew of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Burial of ashes will be in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
