She graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School, and on September 11, 1938, married Russell Elliott Chipman at the Methodist Church in Harlan. The couple farmed several locations in the Harlan and Kirkman, Iowa, areas. In 1979, Russell and Dorothy retired and moved into Harlan, where they lived until Russell’s death on February 26, 2000; Dorothy remained in their home for the remainder of her life.

Dorothy was a longtime active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, and she made it a point to attend worship services whenever possible. She was a good dancer, and she and Russell enjoyed many dances. Dorothy liked to play Bridge, and she greatly enjoyed the fellowship and fun of playing cards and visiting with her friends. She was a fantastic cook and baker, and fixing meals for her family and friends brought her much happiness. Dorothy also enjoyed doing handiwork and made many quilts.
