Dorothy Emmaline Chipman, the daughter of Henry Edward and Helen Margaret (Hipner) Noehren, was born on June 23, 1919, in Oakland, Iowa. She graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School, and on September 11, 1938, married Russell Elliott Chipman at the Methodist Church in Harlan. The couple farmed several locations in the Harlan and Kirkman, Iowa, areas. In 1950, they settled on land located on Road M16, southwest of Harlan; Dorothy helped Russell raise hogs, cattle, and grain. In 1979, Russell and Dorothy retired and moved into Harlan, where they lived until Russell’s death on February 26, 2000; Dorothy remained in their home for the remainder of her life.

Dorothy was a longtime active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, and she made it a point to attend worship services whenever possible. She was a good dancer, and she and Russell enjoyed many dances. Dorothy liked to play Bridge, and she greatly enjoyed the fellowship and fun of playing cards and visiting with her friends.
