Edna Caroline Miller, the daughter of Niels and Kjerstine (Olesen) Madsen, was born on September 3, 1921, in Sharon Township, rural Kimballton, Iowa. When she was two-years-old, her family moved to farm near Exira, Iowa, and she attended Greeley #9 country school. She finished elementary school west of Audubon, Iowa. On October 30, 1942, Edna was united in marriage to Cecil Gerald Miller in Maryville, Missouri. For four years, while Cecil served in the United States Navy, Edna lived in Pensacola, Florida. Following his discharge, the couple moved to Atlantic, Iowa, where their first three children were born. They then lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where their youngest child was born. Edna obtained her GED in 1968. Later, while living in Kiron, Iowa, she attended nurses’ aid training at the Eventide Home in Denison, Iowa. She then worked at Eventide, as well as the Colonial Manor in Odebolt, Iowa, before retiring in 1976 and moving to Harlan, Iowa.

Edna was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. She loved her family and liked to tend her flower garden, watch birds, and enjoy nature.

Edna C. Miller died on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; and four sisters, Anna Sorensen, Edith Long, Lillie Nielsen, and Vina Ritter. She is survived by four children, Philip (Elaine) Miller of Harlan, Iowa, Patricia (Dave) Sorensen of Dexter, Iowa, Steven (Sue) Miller of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Annette (Rick “Stick”) Anderson of Harlan, Iowa; one sister, Palma Williams of Altoona, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on Friday, July 26, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as the organist, and Diane Kastens was the soloist. Casket bearers were Philip Miller II, Ted Retzl, Brian Sorensen, Steven Miller, Christopher Miller, and Timothy Miller. Burial was in the Arlington Heights Cemetery, Audubon, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
