Elizabeth “Bette” Wilhelmena Anderson, the daughter of Anton and Wilhelmena (Behrendt) Schleimer was born on April 15, 1915, on a farm near Panama, Iowa. She was baptized in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. Bette moved to Defiance, Iowa, with her parents and attended rural schools. She helped with household duties wherever needed. Bette worked at the Saylor Coffee Shop for some time. After her marriage she worked at the Harlan Schools for 21 years; she retired in 1985.

On May 12, 1953, Bette was united in marriage to Cleo Arnold Anderson at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. They made their home in Harlan. To this union, two children, David and Julie, were born.

Bette was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and going fishing with Cleo. Bette also liked to watch Cubs baseball.

Bette Anderson died on Monday, February 7, 2011, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 95 years, 9 months, and 23 days.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; three sisters; and one son, David C. Anderson. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Cleo Anderson of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, Julie Bennett of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Penny Anderson of Harlan, Iowa; six grandchildren, Wendy Allmon, Gary Bennett, Lisa Bennett, Dustin Anderson, Airman First Class, Mardy Anderson, and Anthony Bennett; four great-grandchildren, Lyric Allmon, Jorden Bennett, Caleb Hemphill, and Kaia Hill; and other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, February 11, 2011, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Father John Frost celebrating. Serving as musicians were Peggy Lantz and Orv Roecker. Casket bearers were Ron Miller, Loren Ferry, Gary Thraen, Rick Anderson, Marvin Thraen, Howard Thraen, Bill Fitzgerald, and Mardy Anderson. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
