Eugene Cabel Cox, the son of Cabel and Nannie (Cox) Cox, was born on September 2, 1921, in Grassy Creek, North Carolina. He attended school in Grassy Creek. In his early twenties, he worked as a lineman for the telegraph department of the railroad in York, Nebraska. It was there that he met Alvera Marie Petersen. The couple married on December 19, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cordova, Nebraska. They farmed for a few years in Nebraska before purchasing a farm located northeast of Kimballton, Iowa, in 1956. Gene and Alvera retired to Harlan, Iowa, in 1994. In 1996, Gene became a resident of Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa.

Gene enjoyed farming. In his later years he liked doing yard work and gardening.

Eugene C. Cox died on Friday, March 12, 2004, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 10 days.

Preceding Gene in death were his parents and six brothers, Gale Cox, Robert Cox, Rex Cox, Emmitt Cox, Vance Cox, and one infant brother. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alvera Cox of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Morris Cox and wife, Kathy, of Audubon, Iowa; one daughter, Lyn Hansen and husband, Richard, of Audubon, Iowa; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Casket bearers were Scott Griffith, Chris Weston, Scot Hansen, Mike Hansen, and Andy August. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.
