Gene Louise Dixon, the daughter of Harry and Nellie Ann (Phillips) Harper, was born on August 20, 1928, in West Liberty, Iowa. She attended public schools and graduated from Wilton (Iowa) High School in 1945. Gene took one year of college classes before becoming a telegrapher for the Rock Island Railroad; she held this position for five years.

On November 2, 1950, Gene married Charles Marvin Dixon in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The couple moved to Ames, Iowa, where they worked in the Dairy Queen business for four years. In 1958, Gene and Charles moved to Harlan, Iowa, where they owned and operated the Harlan Dairy Queen for 30 years. Following Charles’ death on January 9, 1981, in Eustis, Florida, Gene sold the business.

Gene always enjoyed nature and art, and took up sculpting. She was given the great honor of being asked to create the eagle that would to be mounted and displayed at the Shelby County Courthouse in Harlan. In addition to sculpting, Gene enjoyed painting and carving.

Gene adhered to the Methodist faith. A devoted woman who always put her children first, Gene cherished her family and friends, and was greatly loved in return.

Gene L. Dixon died on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at her home in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 28 days.

Gene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Marvin Dixon; three sisters; and one brother. She is survived by one son, Charvin (Jennifer) Dixon of Brandon, South Dakota; one daughter, Pamela Dixon of Harlan, Iowa; one grandson, Ryan (Eva) Krueger of Glenwood, Iowa; two great-grandsons; and other relatives and friends.

The memorial service was held on Friday, December 21, 2018, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Mike Agnew of First United Methodist Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiated. Burial of ashes was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Hancock, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
