John Dale Jenni, son of Elmer and Olive (Villiam) Jenni, was born on August 9, 1927, in Euclid, Minnesota. He attended school through the eighth grade in a country school near Euclid. Before entering the United States Army, John worked with his father on the family’s farm.
On April 2, 1966, John married Betty Ann Fries at the Presbyterian Church in Shelby, Iowa. The couple made their home in Harlan, Iowa, and the surrounding area. John worked as a general laborer at a number of area businesses, and most recently had delivered furniture for Hineline in Harlan.
Family was very important to John, and his grandchildren were especially special to him. John enjoyed watching wrestling on TV. He also loved spending time tinkering at his acreage, located southwest of Harlan.
John D. Jenni died on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at his home in Harlan, Iowa. He had reached the age of 91 years, 4 months, and 16 days.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Ann Jenni, on December 26, 2011, in Harlan, Iowa; three brothers; and three sisters. He is survived by one daughter, Sheresa Hampton of Harlan, Iowa; one sister, Rena Willert of Crookston, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Stephanie Hampton, Kristina Hampton, Trentity Hampton, and Garrett (Jenni Andersen) Hampton; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Alan W. Hazelton officiating. Honorary casket bearers were Abel Hampton, Rilee Ayers, Trevor Hampton, Alexis Hampton, Dominique Hampton, and Madilee Hampton. Active casket bearers were Braxton Ayers, Mike Nowatzke, Kalen Hinners, Nate Ayers, Jonathan Ayers, Anthony Meier, and Brandon Larson. Military rites were performed by the Helmer-Reyelt American Legion Post #150, and burial was in the Lincoln Township Cemetery in rural Harlan, Iowa.
