Katheryn Hope Fiscus, the daughter of Ole and Clara (Hanson) Olson, was born on November 19, 1923, in Kirkman, Iowa. She attended Irwin (Iowa) schools through the eleventh grade. On April 7, 1941, Katheryn married Melvin A Fiscus in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple farmed near Corley, Iowa, and mostly near Irwin. Upon their retirement in 1987, Katheryn and Melvin moved to Harlan, Iowa. Very recently, Katheryn had become a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.
Katheryn was active in the First United Methodist Church Women’s Circle in Harlan. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Just Friends group. A kind person who was special to many, Katheryn truly loved her family and looked forward to Fiscus Fridays, a monthly gathering of the Fiscus family members. She was a good cook and was known for her home baked angel food cakes and pies. Katheryn also enjoyed her flower garden.
Katheryn H. Fiscus died on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 90 years and 7 months.
Katheryn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin A Fiscus, on January 29, 1997; two sons, Roger Fiscus and Lyle Fiscus; one sister, Helen Snyder; two grandchildren, Kyle Fiscus and Kathern Fry; one great-great-grandchild, Landyn Gall; and one daughter-in-law, Donna Wetzel. She is survived by two sons, Wade (Darlene) Fiscus of Longmont, Colorado, and Dale (Cyn) Fiscus of LaPorte, Colorado; two daughters, Janet (Dennis) Fry of Harlan, Iowa, and Melva Fiscus of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Fiscus of Harlan, Iowa; two brothers, LaVerne (Mary) Olson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Allen (Sandy) Olson of Saint George, Utah; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
A private graveside service was held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Darwin Moore of the First United Methodist Church, Harlan, Iowa, officiating. Katheryn’s loving family served as casket bearers. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
