Larry Steven McCool, the son of Harry M. and Irene M. (Stevens) McCool, was born on February 13, 1923, in Tennant, Iowa. He graduated from Tennant High School in 1942, and attended one year of college at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). From 1943-46, Larry served as a U.S. Army paratrooper in the 508th Infantry Regiment, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Rhineland). For his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. In 1946, after his discharge from the Army, Larry returned to Iowa and began farming east of Tennant.

On July 13, 1950, Larry married Juanita Jane Theulen in Kansas City, Kansas. The couple continued farming until their retirement in 1983. Larry also delivered propane for Peterson Gas in Harlan, Iowa. Following Juanita’s death on October 5, 2009, Larry remained in his home; he had just recently become a resident of the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa.

Larry enjoyed old horse-drawn buggies, and had rebuilt several of them. He collected and restored antique farm gas engines. Larry was also proud of his Tennant home, which he and his brothers-in-law built in the late 1970s.

Larry S. McCool died on Friday, April 24, 2015, at Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 2 months, and 11 days.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita; and one brother, Malcolm McCool. He is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Don) Engemann of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Jack McCool and Robert (Julie) McCool, both of Tennant, Iowa; one brother, Marvin McCool of Atlantic, Iowa; one sister, Marge (Ken) Meyer of Denison, Iowa; five grandchildren, Michael (JoAnn) Engemann, Troy Engemann, Shawn McCool (fiancée, Sheri Rudolph), Lisa (Mark) Becker, and David (Jessica) McCool; five great-grandchildren, Samantha McCool, Brent McCool, Makayla McCool, Emma McCool, and Grant McCool; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Jim Boardman officiating. Casket bearers were Jeff Theulen, Gerald McCool, David McCool, Troy Engemann, Shawn McCool, and Michael Engemann. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
