Leonard Joseph Herbst was born on August 24, 1940, to Leonard and Viola (Olson) Herbst in Panama, Iowa. In 1944, they moved to Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic School and Harlan High School. In 1958, Leonard joined the US Air Force. After basic training he was assigned to the 3640th pilot training wing at Laredo AFB, Texas. After his discharge in 1964, he attended college at the University of Texas for one year. In 1966, he moved back to Harlan and worked for Western Iowa Pork. That same year, he married Connie Alex. To this union a daughter, LeAnn, was born; she joined a step-sister, Robin, and a step-brother, Mark.

After the closing of Western Iowa Pork, Leonard joined the US Army and was Administration Technician and recruiter for the 1034th S&S Company in Audubon, Iowa. In 1979, he began working for Dubuque Packing plant in Denison, Iowa, as a processed meat supervisor. When that plant closed in 1983, Leonard went back to school, attending Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. During that year, he was hired as a consultant for SYSCO Corporation, Houston, Texas, and worked as a products buyer and inspector. He worked in that position until 2007. In 1992, Leonard moved to Denison, where in addition to his work for SYSCO, he was property manager for SaltPck LLC, a leasing company.

Leonard was a member of the Masonic Lodge #507, Denison, Iowa, Grand Lodge of Iowa AF & AM, and was a 32° Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Harlan Shrine Club and the American Legion. In his free time, Leonard liked to fish and enjoyed trips to South Dakota.

Leonard J. Herbst died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Myrtue Medical Center, Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 74 years, 5 months, and 17 days.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, and one stepson, Mark Alex. He is survived by one daughter, LeAnn Klein of Omaha, Nebraska; one stepdaughter, Robin (Tom) Powers of Harlan, Iowa; three sisters, Marlis Patten of Harlan, Iowa, Jolene Nielsen of Kevil, Kentucky, and Rhonda Wendt of Portsmouth, Iowa; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

A Masonic Service, conducted by Parian Lodge #321 AF & AM, was held on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. A Military Service was held on Sunday, February 15, 2015, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, with the VFW Post #941 and the Helmer-Reyelt American Legion Post #150 officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
