Loa Dell Edwards, the daughter of Otto R. and Mary J. (Miles) Handy, was born on August 8, 1925, in Kirkman, Iowa. She was a 1943 graduate of Harlan (Iowa) High School, where she worked in the superintendent’s office. On June 2, 1944, Loa Dell married Delbert Vinding Edwards at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. While Delbert served in WWII, Loa Dell lived with her parents. In 1951, the couple moved first to Riverton, Wyoming, to homestead, then to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 1965, Delbert and Loa Dell moved to a farm near Marne, Iowa, where they lived until their retirement. From 1995-2004, they resided in Harlan, and then returned to Riverton.

Loa Dell was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. While living in Harlan, she was a member of the Sewing Club and the Pitch Club. She had served as a 4-H leader in Wyoming, and had been active in her church. Loa Dell was a good cook and baker who made her own homemade bread and butter. She greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took interest in their activities.

Loa Dell Edwards died on Thursday, October 31, 2013, in Riverton, Wyoming, at the age of 88 years, 2 months, and 23 days.

Loa Dell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delbert Vinding Edwards, on April 11, 2011; one sister, Donna Jean Dickinson; and one infant brother, Jimmy Handy. She is survived by two sons, John (Jodi) Edwards of Riverton, Wyoming, and Robert Edwards of Belgrade, Montana; one daughter, Mary (Duane) Maher of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother, Terry Handy of Sandy, Utah; five grandchildren, Lisa (Lupe) Alvarez, Amy (K.W.) Frields, Adam (Jenny) Kite, Timothy Edwards, and Andrew (Amber) Edwards; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Altamont Baptist Church in rural Shelby County, Iowa, with Rev. Diana Holland officiating. Service music was provided by Aurora Dell Alvarez, Maria Isabell Alvarez, and Lilia Leticia Alvarez. Burial of ashes was in the Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery, rural Shelby County, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Services were arranged by the Edwards family with assistance from Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa.
