Marian Jean Petersen, the first born daughter of Nellie and Julius Ohrt was born on April 1, 1924, on the family farm in Ewoldt Township, rural Manning, Iowa. She attended Manning public school where she excelled academically and graduated with the Class of 1942. While in school, she was a member of the Quill and Scroll, honor society, the order of Gregg shorthand artists, and the Artistic typist society. Marian was also the school newspaper editor. After graduation, Marian worked for Dultmeier Manufacturing in Manning for seven and a half years.

Marian met her husband, Marvin Petersen, at the annual summer celebration in Manning. The couple was married at the Presbyterian manse in Manning on April 20, 1950. Marian and Marvin farmed near Irwin, Iowa. She raised a huge garden every year and did lots of freezing and canning. She raised chickens, ducks, and geese, and helped with farm work.

Marian enjoyed helping and socializing with neighbor ladies and their families. Marian and Marvin enjoyed fishing, going to the dog races occasionally, snowmobiling, the CB club, and the trap line where they caught, skinned, stretched and sold furs. They liked flea markets, garage sales, and auctions where they bought and sold items. During that time, they also collected items, including Mickey Mouse items, cylinder lamps, and gravy boats.

The couple never missed an Irwin girls’ basketball game in the six years their daughter, Connie, played the center forward position and were proud of the accomplishments of the team.

Later on, Marvin and Marian moved to Irwin, where she worked at the local cafe. She was later involved with the senior center where she was involved in fund raising and received some volunteer awards. She was also a member of the Greenridge Club.

Marian spent a lot of time doing filet crochet, creating beautiful pieces of art. She was a good seamstress, making quilts and sewing her daughter’s clothing. She also helped Connie and her friends with 4-H team demonstration practices.

In later years, Marian enjoyed a her first airplane flight to see friends in Kentucky, riding in Carol’s 48 Dodge, visiting the trailer at KOA, visiting a casino, staying at a bed and breakfast in eastern Iowa, and many other things. She cheered on the Hawkeyes and the Cubs and enjoyed good conversations.

Marian J. Petersen died on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa. She had reached the age of 93 years and 7 days.
