Mildred Opal Peters Quimby

d. March 23, 2004

Mildred Opal Peters Quimby, the daughter of John Lincy and Della Mae (Edwards) Sinison, was born on December 4, 1905, on a farm near Arkoe, Missouri. When she was quite young, her parents moved to the Persia and Shelby, Iowa, area, where she attended school. After her eighth grade year, she left school to care for her ill mother and help her father farm.

On November 19, 1924, Mildred married Ernest Peters at the German Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. They farmed his parents’ land west of Corley, and Mildred became a busy farm wife and mother. In 1951, Ernest and Mildred moved to a farm located north of Tennant, Iowa, and lived there until 1953, when they built a new home in Tennant. After Ernest’s death in 1957, Mildred continued to live in this home. Her father died in 1970, and she began spending winters in Arizona. It was there that she met Isaac (Ike) Quimby. Mildred and Ike were married on July 4, 1973, in San Diego, California. They spent the winter months in his home in Arizona and summer months in her Tennant home. When Ike died in 1989, Mildred returned to live fulltime in her Tennant home. In 1998, Mildred became a resident of the Elm Crest apartments in Harlan, Iowa; she moved to the Assisted Living unit in July, 2000. In December, 2000, she became a resident of the nursing home area.

Mildred was a baptized member of the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, and was a member of the Neighborhood Ladies Pioneer Club. She truly enjoyed her family and loved sharing her homemade rolls with them. She liked gardening, canning, and freezing produce, sewing for herself and family members, card games, fishing, dancing, and snapping pictures. She gave her children and grandchildren crocheted afghans and her autobiography, which she had written for her 90th birthday celebration.

Mildred O. Peters Quimby died on Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 98 years, 3 months, and 19 days.

Preceding Mildred in death were her parents; her first husband, Ernest Peters; her second husband, Isaac Quimby; one daughter, Pearl Knudsen; and one daughter-in-law, Verlee Peters. She is survived by three sons, Harold Peters of Tennant, Iowa, Richard (Pola) Peters of Avoca, Iowa, and Eugene (Naomi) Peters of Tennant, Iowa; one sister, Pearl (Leslie) West of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one son-in-law, Merlyn (Jeanette) Knudsen of Kimballton, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
