Opal Darlene Marcussen, daughter of John O. and Anna R. (Olsen) Petersen, was born on July 29, 1925, in Harlan, Iowa. She attended Walnut, Iowa, schools, and graduated from Harlan High School in 1942. On February 8, 1949, Opal married Helmer Woodrow Marcussen at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan; the couple farmed four miles north of Jacksonville, Iowa, for 30 years.

Shortly after Helmer’s death on April 21, 1980, in Omaha, Nebraska, Opal moved to her new home in the Cresthaven addition of Harlan. She lived there until 2017, when she became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, Iowa.

Opal was a member of the Irwin United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. She loved spending time outside, caring for her home, mowing, planting flowers, and watching birds, especially cardinals. Opal also enjoyed reading, cooking, canning, baking, and watching football.  She liked to play Pitch and was know to be a tough opponent. Opal attended Sewing Club, and loved taking family vacations.

Opal D. Marcussen died on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 20 days.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Helmer Marcussen; and one brother, Wayne Petersen. She is survived by three children, Ann (King) Cole of Savage, Minnesota, Terry Marcussen of Adair, Iowa; and Karen Marcussen of Cleveland, Tennessee; and other friends and relatives.

The memorial service was held on Friday, February 21, 2020, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Sam Jacobs, Salem Lutheran Homes Chaplain, officiating. Burial of ashes was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Harlan Community Library, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
