Thomas Joseph Weis, the son of Robert Joseph and Ruth Ann (Schaben) Weis, was born on November 28, 1954, in Earling, Iowa. He attended Westphalia (Iowa) and Defiance schools, and Harlan (Iowa) High School. He first ran a paper route and then worked at assisted work sites of Wesco in Denison, Iowa, and later at Concerned, Inc., in Harlan, where he was employed for many years. Thomas made his home at the Country Care Center in rural Harlan.

Thomas was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially at family gatherings. He liked walking, music, attending Harlan Cyclone football games with his brother-in-law, Jerry Chamberlain, getting a quart of vanilla ice cream at DQ, and eating steak and eggs with his brother, Bob. Thomas truly enjoyed life.

Thomas J. Weis died on Friday, May 13, 2011, at the Country Care Center in rural Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 56 years, 5 months, and 15 days.

Thomas was preceded in death by one niece, Melissa Mikkelsen, and one nephew, Brad Chamberlain. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Ruth Ann Schaben Weis of Defiance, Iowa; three brothers, Robert (Donna) Weis, Jr. of Harlan, Iowa, Tony Weis (fiancée, Kathy Baker) of Denver, Colorado, and Russ (Jessica) Weis of Ames, Iowa; six sisters, Sheila Mikkelsen (friend, Ron Buckholdt), Joan (Jerry) Chamberlain, and Lisa Erickson (friend, Bart Sullivan), all of Harlan, Iowa, Nancy Falkena of Carroll, Iowa, Jude Fox (friend, Shane Gaskill) of Manilla, Iowa, and Ronda (Ted) Jansen of Aspinwall, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 16, 2011, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, with Father John Frost of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Harlan, celebrating. Serving as musicians were Judy Rewerts and George Rewerts. Honorary casket bearers were Thomas’ loving brothers and sisters. Active casket bearers were Dan Erickson, Jim Weis, Ethan Weis, Geoff Falkena, Joe Lile, Mike Weis, and Chris Klitgaard. Burial was in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
