Virgil Eugene Carter, the son of William Oliver and Esther (Garret) Carter, was born on July 20, 1921, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended country schools and graduated from Irwin (Iowa) High School in 1938. Following high school graduation, Virgil attended AIB Business School in Des Moines, Iowa. During that time, he worked in a restaurant and had the pleasure of waiting on Ronald Reagan. In 1940, Virgil bought a farm on Timber Road in Shelby County, Iowa; along with farming this land, he worked on various threshing crews.
On August 18, 1962, Virgil married Ruby Kathryn Michel in Harlan, Iowa. The couple continued to farm and raise livestock until recently.
Virgil was a member of the Irwin United Methodist Church in Irwin. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and the Farm Service Coop. Virgil enjoyed taking care of his vegetable garden, and fishing – preferably from the shore! Virgil and Ruby liked traveling together, and they had visited many foreign destinations.
Virgil E. Carter died on Monday, August 17, 2015, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 94 years and 28 days.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kathryn Pennell; and one granddaughter, Dena Carter. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Carter of Irwin, Iowa; two sons, Michel Carter of Hamlin, Iowa, and William (Kathleen) Carter of Irwin, Iowa; four grandchildren, Leah (Justin) Washburn of Urbandale, Iowa, and Ryan Carter, Ethan Carter, and Liam Carter, all of Irwin, Iowa; one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Washburn of Urbandale, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
The memorial service was held on Thursday, August 20, 2015, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Ted Sieck of the Irwin Church of Christ in Irwin, Iowa, officiating. Burial of ashes was held in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Irwin, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
