Wilma Mae Sorensen, daughter of Sterling and Berma (Fiscus) Harris, was born on August 4, 1934, in Lyman, Iowa. She attended country schools and graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School in 1952. On August 7, 1952, Wilma married Dale Andrew Sorensen at the Redline Church of Christ, rural Shelby County, Iowa.
The couple moved to Harlan in 1954, and Wilma worked as a secretary for Thraen Insurance for many years. She was also employed as the manager of the Harlan Ben Franklin store for several years. In 1986, Wilma and Dale began spending the winters in Arkansas, and in 1989, they moved to Shirley, Arkansas. In 2010, they returned to Harlan. Wilma became a resident of the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa, in 2012.
Wilma was an active member of the Harlan Church of Christ. She also was a member of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of North America. Wilma enjoyed gardening and selling Avon products.
Wilma M. Sorensen died on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa. She had reached the age of 82 years and 8 months.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dale Andrew Sorensen, on January 31, 2011. She is survived by one son, Donald (Dee) Sorensen of Harlan, Iowa; three sisters, Elizabeth Walling of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Gladys (Donald) Robinson of Irwin, Iowa, and Alice (Jerry) Nollen of Arion, Iowa; four grandchildren, Sterling (fiancée, Katie) Sorensen of Portsmouth, Iowa, Shantelle Sorensen of Harlan, Iowa, Andrew (Kathy) Sorensen of Shelby, Iowa, and Jacob (Ann) Sorensen of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania; six great-grandchildren; and other friends and relatives.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 1:00 PM at the Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Roy North officiating. Burial of ashes will be held in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
